Alithea Genomics is a market leader in large-scale RNA sequencing, pioneering technologies like BRB-seq and DRUG-seq that enable multiplexing of up to 384 samples simultaneously. As they prepared to launch their first eCommerce platform and expand their US operations, they needed a website that reflected their technical innovation whilst serving distinct audiences: pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, and academic institutions.
We partnered with Alithea to refresh their digital presence with a focus on three critical areas: repositioning their homepage to clearly communicate their large-scale specialisation, building an integrated eCommerce platform for complex B2B transactions, and creating custom animations that demonstrate their technological advantages. The result is a website that positions Alithea as the go-to solution for high-volume RNA sequencing projects.
A major component of this project was launching Alithea's first eCommerce platform. Previously, all orders required manual quotation, creating friction in the customer journey and limiting growth potential. However, the complexity of their business model presented significant challenges for a standard online shop.
We built the eCommerce experience on Shopify Plus, integrating it seamlessly with their HubSpot CMS website. The integration is invisible to users: the shop maintains identical visual design and navigation, creating one continuous experience rather than feeling like a separate platform.
Rather than a traditional checkout, the system functions as a quote generation tool that suits Alithea's B2B sales model. Customers build their order by selecting products and quantities, then submit for quotation. The system handles multiple currencies (USD, EUR, GBP, CHF) with region-based pricing, manages various product variants based on sample capacity, and routes quote requests to the appropriate sales team.
We implemented an account verification system that ensures only qualified institutional buyers can access pricing and request quotes, protecting Alithea's B2B sales model. The result gives customers a streamlined path from product discovery to quote request whilst maintaining the consultative sales process that complex scientific purchases require.
To make the site more visually engaging, we created custom animations and exported them as Lottie files rather than using video files or GIFs. This technical decision delivers multiple benefits: Lottie animations are vector-based, meaning they scale perfectly to any screen size without quality loss, and they're significantly smaller in file size than MP4 or GIF alternatives, typically reducing file weight by 10x or more. This approach exemplifies our philosophy of building for performance without compromising visual impact.
